Definition Of Hamstring Injury

A hamstring injury is an injury to three groups of muscles in the back of the thigh. These muscles are not used very much when a person is standing or walking.

Hamstring will be very active when doing activities that require someone to bend the legs, such as running, jumping, and climbing. Doing these activities will increase the risk of hamstring injury. To minimize the risk of hamstring injury, muscle stretching and muscle strengthening exercises should be done routinely.

Symptoms of Hamstring Injuries:

Symptoms are something that is felt and told by the patient. If the hamstring muscle is injured, usually the patient will feel some of the following:
  • Severe pain and tearing or breaking sensation on the back of the thigh.
  • Swelling.
  • Bruises on the site of injury.
  • Weak muscles can not even put a burden on the injured leg.
Consult your doctor immediately if the injured leg is unable to withstand the load, or is unable to walk more than four steps without pain.

Causes and Risk Factors for Hamstring Injuries

Hamstring injuries can occur if the muscles in the back of the thigh are attracted beyond their ability. This can happen when someone makes sudden moves such as running fast, jumping, or crashing suddenly.
However, hamstring injuries can also occur when a person performs a slow movement but pulls the thigh muscles in excess. If someone has suffered a hamstring injury, then he has a greater risk of getting the same injury.

Some factors that cause a person at risk for hamstring injury are:

  • Muscle flexibility is poor. This can cause the muscles unable to withstand the load of certain activities that require muscle flexibility.
  • Muscle development is not balanced. Some experts claim that if the thigh muscles develop stronger, the hamstring muscles are more susceptible to injury.
  • Sports Running short distance or dancing demands hamstring muscles stretch more. This will make the risk of hamstring injury is greater.
  • History of hamstring injury. If a person has been exposed to a hamstring injury, then he has a greater risk of getting hit again.

Diagnosis of Hamstring Injury

Diagnosis is a doctor's step to identify a disease or condition that explains the symptoms and signs experienced by the patient. Generally, your doctor will do the following two ways to diagnose a hamstring injury:
  • Physical examination. The doctor will examine the swelling as well as the painful part of the back of the thigh. The location of the injury as well as the intensity of the pain will help the doctor to infer the cause of the injury.
  • Imaging test. In severe hamstring injuries, sometimes a small part of the bone is broken and attracted together with hamstring muscles. X-ray imaging is able to help doctors examine the small bone fractures. While ultrasound and MRI tests can check the tear in the muscle.

Hamstring injuries can be divided into three namely:

  • Level 1: The hamstring muscles are only interested lightly or stiffen. Injured legs can still bear the burden. Usually, the healing period is only a few days.
  • Level 2: Rupture of some hamstring muscles. Feeling more painful, visibly swollen, bruised, and injured legs weaker while holding the load. The healing period can be several weeks to several months.
  • Level 3: All the hamstring muscles are torn. Extremely painful, swollen, bruised, sensation of tears during injury, and legs can not be used at all to walk. The healing period can be several weeks to several months.

Treatment of Hamstring Injury

Patients with hamstring injuries are required to not perform heavy activities until the muscle recovers. In addition, there are several ways that can dtempuh to handle hamstring injuries are:

  • Consumption of drugs to reduce pain and swelling. For example ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Compress with ice cubes  do it several times a day to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Use a support stick  so that the injured leg does not support the entire body weight.
  • Wrap and lift an injured foot to minimize the swelling.
  • Surgery to reattach the hamstring muscles is entirely interested in the pelvic bone or shins. Surgery can also deal with torn muscles quite badly.
  • Physical therapy by doing exercises designed to increase flexibility and strengthen hamstring muscles.
